National Day of Mourning • July 28, 2024

On July 6, 2024, Sonya Massey, an unarmed 36 year-old Black mother of two, who called 911 for assistance, was shot in the face and killed by a Sangamon County deputy sheriff in her home in downtown Springfield, Illinois.

Sean Grayson, a white police officer, shot Massey in the face three times when he killed her. He has been fired from his job and charged with murder. It has been revealed that he held jobs with five other police departments in the last four years.

This protest, this past Sunday was sponsored by the People’s Organization For Progress (POP) and co-sponsored by the Association for the Study of Classical African Civilizations (ASCAC) Study Group, Newark Communities for Accountable Policing, All Politics Are Local, Newark Anti-Violence Coalition and other groups.

We had a good, powerful gathering and we shut down the usually busy Newark intersection at Broad and Market for something like 45mins to an hour. Justice for Sonya Massey! Stop Police Brutality! POWER TO THE PEOPLE!

Elders Week! • July 8 – 13, 2024

We have been at a number of Summer of Heat events, not just during Elders Week, but all summer long! Join Stop the Money Pipeline, New York Communities for Change, Third Act, and more to be sure that Citigroup gets the message: stop funding fossil fuels!

Radical Elders (including Ana Juarbe, Ted Glick and Angel Roman) joined Climate activists from the elder group Third Act who held a mock-funeral in front of Citibank’s headquarters in Manhattan to protest the climate crisis on Monday, July 8.

Third Act  said it was “demanding that #WallStreet banks and financiers stop using our hard-earned retirement savings to fund the #climatecrisis,” calling Citibank “the world’s biggest funder of fossil fuel expansion.”
